The Schools’ Refurbishing Programme - the first school nearly completed

As we say goodbye to 2023, the Amazon Charitable Trust (ACT) shares significant progress on a transformative project that quietly commenced in late 2022. Our collaboration with CoopXixuaú has been laying the groundwork for a crucial initiative: the refurbishment and reconstruction of 12 primary schools in the RESEX Lower Rio Branco Jauaperi.

The urgency of this project arises from the severe damage inflicted upon the primary schools during the extreme flooding events of 2021-2022 (read more here). These schools, essential education hubs for local children, have faced deteriorating conditions, lacking basic infrastructure post-flood. For children in these communities, these schools represent not just places of learning but their sole avenue to education, despite facing socio-economic barriers. The endeavour to enhance educational conditions is crucial, fostering literacy skills among children, and enabling them to learn within their unique forest communities. Simultaneously, it plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the natural resources and traditional ways of life integral to the Amazonian culture.

Some schools, like the one in the Bela Vista community, required more than refurbishment; they needed reconstruction. Thanks to the generous support of two family trusts, reconstruction of the first school of this programme commenced in July 2023 and, through dedicated efforts by CoopXixuaú, is nearing completion.

The crescendo of positive news resonates further as ACT proudly announces the receipt of a grant from the esteemed Educational Opportunity Foundation (EOF, former British & Foreign School Society, BFSS). This not only bolsters the financial foundation of our Educational project but also exemplifies the shared commitment to nurturing the minds of the future. With gratitude, we extend our thanks to BFSS for supporting a programme ready to impact nearly 200 children along the Jauaperi river.

As we forge ahead, this initiative symbolizes the harmonious convergence of determination, collaboration, and philanthropy, embodying the core principles of ACT. Stay tuned as we continue to support transformative renovation in the educational narrative of the Amazon.
